Preparing for the long-awaited Polish premiere of Woody Allen's new film "Vicky, Cristina, Barcelona" I decided to recall the previous comedy of the master of intellectual humor under the Polish title "Scoop - hot topic". The person binding both of these productions (apart from the director himself) is one of the most recognizable and talented young blondes of the world cinema - Scarlett Johansson.

"Scoop" offers us well-known Allenian entertainment. I will point out, however, that the image created here deviates slightly from the very characteristic one, based primarily on cut, brilliant Woody-style dialogues. The master in this song is more inclined than is usually the case towards the average viewer who desires efficient, fast and funny intrigue, not wanting to listen only to the conversations of the main characters.

He plays a slightly different role from those prevailing in his work. As a somewhat older gentleman, the center of gravity of his humor has already moved a little away from female-male subjects, directing him towards universal verbal and not only verbal clowning.

The comedy crime story is accompanied by the famous musical theme from the ballet Swan Lake, adding to it at appropriate moments.


Anyway, you don't have to dwell too long on the composition of the song, which you can't fault. Everything looks great, the action is extremely absorbing, adorned with Woody's great humor. It does not matter that it was already, what counts is that even such reheated food tastes great. Some of Woody's arguments are fantastic. For example, he regrets the children who need to be looked after all their lives, and then they accuse you of Alzheimer's. However, wanting to take Scarlett to a sumptuous birthday dinner, she offers her McDonald's. Such humorous motifs prevail in this film - they relate to father-daughter relations, instead of sexual relations between a man and a woman.

However, there are opinions that express regret for old Allen in a witty and brilliant way analyzing male-female relations. On the other hand, I see in Scoop a conscious acceptance of the passing time, which prompts the filmmaker to take on other subjects and challenges of acting and directing more suited to his own position in the age structure of society. "Scoop" is an example of a great crime comedy, located at the opposite pole to the movie "Shoot first, then explore", which is also classified as the same genre.

In the song mentioned, humor is an addition to a serious, sometimes violent plot.

In Allen's work, however, the whole story, its lightness and smoothness have comedy features, while criminal intrigue is a great spice to the main course. This combination to the rhythm of Tchaikovsky's music brings a sensational and relaxing effect. The whole movie is definitely worth watching, and most rally shows by Allen behind the Smart wheel.
